One local employer, Nationwide Better Health shared how it has achieved significant reductions in absence and disability costs by integrating benefit plans.

Biographies:
Thomas Parry, Ph.D. is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Integrated Benefits Institute (IBI), a San Francisco-based independent, not-for-profit, national organization incorporated in 1995. The Institute provides research, employerfocused measurement tools and educational programs to improve health and productivity management through the integration of employee benefits. In addition to directing IBI’s activities, he is heavily involved in IBI’s research program. Most recently, he served as principal researcher on a study analyzing the impact of linking medical care and disability data, and directed research on how Chief Financial Officers link workforce health to business outcomes. Before co-founding IBI, Dr. Parry served 11 years as Research Director at the California Workers’ Compensation Institute where he did research on medical treatment patterns, vocational rehabilitation costs and effectiveness, legal costs and trends, medical utilization, mental stress claims, and physical therapy patterns of care. Dr. Parry speaks on integrated benefits and health and productivity issues at conferences and symposia in the United States and internationally. Dr. Parry received his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.
Joseph San Filippo is chief health care strategist, Nationwide Better Health, a subsidiary of Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. San Filippo is responsible for health care strategy product development and strategic partnerships. Prior to his current assignment, he served as president and chief operating officer of Nationwide Health Plans, a position he held for 8 years. He also served as vice president, group claims and administration for Wausau Insurance, another Nationwide Insurance subsidiary. Prior to joining Nationwide Insurance, Mr. San Filippo was employed by Pacific Mutual Life Insurance for 17 years where he held the positions of vice president, managed care, and vice president, group benefits. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from St. Norbert College and a Master of Business Administration from Northern Illinois University. In 1985, he earned his Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation. In 2006, Mr. San Filippo served on Governor Taft's Ohio Medicaid Study Council and he has been on the board of the American Heart Association Ohio Metro Division since 2001where he was president for 2 years. He is also on the boards of the American Heart Association’s Great Rivers Affiliate, the Ohio Association of Health Plans and on the advisory boards of TechColumbus and the Health Policy Institute of Ohio.
